LIAC service policy

What can we do for you?
The LIAC service is provided to meet the legal information needs of residents across NSW. Through our centre in the State Library of NSW and in our Public Library LIACs you will be able to obtain help from trained legal information staff.

What sort of questions do we answer?
Read our case studies to find out how we may be able to assist you. We can help with simple and quite complex legal issues. In order to do this we may provide you with extracts from published works, referral to a particular legal text or website, or we may put you in contact with other experts. Whatever the answer, we will deliver it in the way most effective and convenient to you, whether that be by fax, post, email or phone.

Who is the service for?
Anyone in NSW who has a legal issue and needs to find the law. We recommend you start your research in your local public library. Visiting the State Library LIAC will give you access to more comprehensive resources and specialist staff. For clients in regional NSW we recommend you start in your local public library. We can undertake some research for people who are unable to visit us, and whose requests cannot be satisfied through our public library services.
Whilst we do not undertake research for students, we will recommend strategies and resources.

Who are our main clients?
We provide services for all NSW residents. Please contact us to discuss your information needs. If you are a student, we can recommend key strategies for finding information in your local area and at our LIAC libraries. We will undertake research for all NSW Public Libraries, Community Legal Centres, government libraries, correctional centres, and for those clients who, for particular reasons, cannot visit us.

How can you contact us?
You can ring, write, email, fax or visit us. We can answer simple enquiries over the phone from published sources. All NSW public libraries can contact us on your behalf.

How long will it take?
LIAC will negotiate to meet your deadline.

What if you still have needs after using our service?
We can refer you to free advice on your legal issue or in your local area. LIAC offers legal information but cannot provide legal advice.
