LIAC Case Studies

Family law

A client from outer metropolitan Sydney visited their local library looking for information on family law. He was recently divorced and wanted to know if he could relocate to another state and take his child with him. He used the Legal Tool Kit, in particular The Family Law Handbook 2007. From this he obtained a good overview of the legal framework and some practical tips. Staff at the library recommended he visit the State Library LIAC for more detailed information. He travelled there the next day. He was shown detailed publications including a CCH looseleaf service featuring information on the recent changes to family law. He then researched the principle of the best interests of the child and how the court system sees this.

Social Security

A woman came into LIAC with a letter from the Department of Social Security which quoted sections of the Act relating to garnishee orders. She wanted to see the legislation and draft a letter of appeal. LIAC staff showed her the legislation, and in addition, located the relevant sections of the Department's policy manual and a plain language guide with explanations and sample letters. She was also informed about the services of the Welfare Rights Centre and given full contact details from LIAC's Free Legal Advice and Assistance: A Referral Guide
